A Brooklyn high school community has been left shaken after a gym teacher and athletic director was arrested over allegations that he sent explicit images and inappropriate messages to a 16-year-old student.
The case has prompted renewed scrutiny of safeguarding measures within New York City public schools.

Allegations Against NYC Department of Education Employee
The suspect, Michael Boitano, 40, is a long-serving employee of the New York City Department of Education.
Prosecutors allege that the incident occurred in October, when what began as an offer to drive a student home escalated into inappropriate contact on social media.
Authorities say Boitano allegedly used Snapchat to send the student a photograph of his genitals.

Prosecutors Describe Explicit Messages in Court

According to court filings, the image was accompanied by messages that prosecutors described as coercive and inappropriate.
Assistant Brooklyn District Attorney Kellen Michuda told the court that Boitano questioned the student about her romantic experiences and racial preferences.
One message allegedly stated:
“I know you’ve said you’ve been with a guy before and would totally be with a white guy at least once.”
Another message directly asked whether the student would kiss him if he initiated physical contact.

Student Alerted Friends and School Officials
Rather than keeping the incident private, the student shared the messages with classmates.
Those students immediately reported the situation to school staff.
School administrators then contacted law enforcement, prompting an investigation.

Boitano was arrested on Wednesday and arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court.
He faces multiple charges, including:

During the arraignment, Boitano appeared in court wearing a hoodie and shorts.
The judge set bail at $10,000 and issued an order of protection prohibiting any contact with the alleged victim, including online communication.

Boitano’s wife and family members attended the court hearing but declined to comment to reporters.
